RACISM

(This is actually a late post. I wrote it a while ago after watching the shocking murder of Alton Sterling by a policeman in the United States. I'm still posting this piece now because it's still very much relevant:)

A couple of nights ago, I stumbled on a grotesque video that almost ruined my night. I had to try hard to ignore what I had seen just so I could sleep. I saw white police shoot a black man who didn't seem to resist arrest. Just like that, another human being ushered out of the world like he was a rodent. Seeing and hearing about this kind of things creates an emotional cycle in me: I'm sad about the tragedy, then in a split second, I lash out at Africans. We don't seem to care about our own lives, so why should the white man think our lives matter? You can see how the world stops when attacks occur in the West. But when more gruesome attacks occur in Africa, it's business as usual; nobody seems to care about us. And sometimes it's hard to blame them because we don't seem to bother as well. With all the resources Africa is endowed with, it's a shame that we're still a ridiculously poor continent. Our leaders are so selfish, all they think about are their pockets. They don't have any passion for their birthplace. As long as the people they oppress still bow down and worship them, they're good. They go out to the developed world and see what development means, but instead of having the burning desire to return home, replicate, or even do better for their people, they turn a blind eye. The best they can do is go on TV and tell us the economy is doing like this, is doing like this - bunch of clueless illiterate clowns. If our leaders gave a hoot about this beautiful continent and developed it, then we would matter globally and the globe would have respect for our black skin. But sadly, today when a black man is mentioned on the news, it'll hardly be for anything good. Thus, that's how we're ignorantly perceived worldwide, as a race of no-gooders because of course, nothing good can come out of someone with a black skin. Haven't you wondered why Africans don't have this organic disgust for Whites? Haven't you pondered why we have so much respect and warm welcome for them instead? It's firstly because we're a hospitable people; our culture teaches us to show kindness to visitors. But also because we discern their civilization and achievements, their socio-economic growth and development. So, we see them as demigods and welcome them with open arms. Now, how can they reciprocate the same kind of courtesy when we're still uncivilized and have no palpable achievements, growth and development? They're blinded by capitalism, so if they can't gain anything from you, they lose their humanity towards you. Yes, based on their actions, being human alone isn't enough. That's their culture.

I saw a T-shirt on Notorious B.I.G that read, "Future Police Officer." And it had the picture of white men fully clothed with the KKK masks and garments. Unfortunately, that's what the reality is today. Racism is evident. It's real. And I'm sad because I know my worth, but I also know when the white man sees my skin, all he wants to do is puke. Yes, he gets on TV and sounds evolved and politically correct, but I'm not deceived; his actions speak otherwise. He's too depthless to see what lies beneath my skin. Since I didn't create Facebook or Instagram, I'm just another random monkey. And that's the mindset of these "KKK police". Why else would they swear to serve and protect but end up looking for the minutest of reasons to murder black men?...

My goodness. This is depressing, but let's not lose hope. Let the gloom of reality not mask our prudence. Therefore, it's time to wake up and be wise, okay? Let's not give the racist police a reason or an excuse to carry out his devilish desires. Let's not use our own hands to strengthen his ill-birthed negative perception of us, thereby reinforcing his diabolical intentions for us. Capisce? And duuh, the racists think our lives don't matter, so please let's show them our lives actually are important since they're shallow enough to form an opinion based on skin colour alone. Let's respect ourselves and strive to develop ourselves in every sphere of life. Let's be the best at everything we lay our hands on. This is the best revenge we can serve them. We don't have to hate or kill them too. That'll be too weak and merciful. With determination and with God on our side, nothing is impossible. I assure you, we can achieve this and more.

Lastly, I address you my dear White Man. It's no secret we blacks haven't done a good job helping ourselves, but that doesn't mean we should be killed like repulsive animals. If God used that logic for a second, no human being would be alive today; black, white or purple. Got it?

  1. Another great piece here.

We as a race (black) need to teach others how to treat us by treating ourselves the way we want to be treated. But we have failed in that aspect. We treat our brothers and sister with no respect. Especially those in the position of power, they love to treat the common man like an animal. You go to the rich homes in Nigeria for instance, they often have house maid(s) whom they pay very minimal wage with little to no respect at all. And when a white person comes to Nigeria and see the way we hire those maids very cheaply. They copy the same thing by hiring and treating our people poorly, while we treat them like super humans. In the western world, even the rich can't keep house maids all the time because those maids cost them fortunes. They have to pay them very high fees because they are humans doing physical labour and labour is very expensive.
Another thing is that We black people often discriminate against each other. Example, a black person will treat a dark skin black person different from a light skin black person just like the slave masters treated us. When we do that, we are simply showing the other races that we do not like who we are, we want our skin to be like the Caucasian skin, just like the slave masters envisioned.
Until we learn to accept ourselves (appreciate our different shades and not try to be like the white man, we would continue to have issues and the white man will continue to treat us the way he want. The white man came and created this colorism just to make his skin seem superior to others as a means to control us and we accepted it wholeheartedly instead of stand up for ourselves

Things like this drives us father apart and create disunity and hatred among us. But I must be careful not to blame the victim entirely. I must blame the white man too for creating color-ism just to make himself seem superior, thus, brain washing some of our people into believing that we couldn't be like them. Perhaps, that is why some of our leader will traveled overseas and enjoy all the good things and instead of them going home and replicating or doing even better than what they saw, as you mentioned, they just don't do anything because of selfish reasons or they think they could never make their country or continent as beautiful as the white mans. "We need leaders with passion and love"

  2. Wow Henry! A lot of wisdom in your comment. It could actually be published as an article on its own lol. This is wonderful. I hope more people get to see this.
I believe in my heart that we shall overcome. But first, we need enlightenment and determination. And only then will God be interested in helping us. Also, I believe strongly that our leaders really need some profound cognitive evolution for them to actually enact the change we need. If we do the needful, we shall become a great people, and I pray I get to see such a day when the black skin is regarded with high esteem. Amen!

  4. lol Thank you!
Amen! I pray to see that day too.

And I pray our leaders will begin to see with their minds like real visionaries and not just with their blind eyes.
