THE EPIDEMIC THAT IS PARTISAN POLITICS
Can a nation progress when it can't call a spade a spade at all times? Why do we choose to either support or oppose leaders for personal, sentimental, and selfish reasons? In fact, it has degenerated to the point where we barely support candidates, but parties - crude mentality... I wrote this piece because of my vivid observation of how partisan support of politicians and political parties has become an epidemic that is rapidly deteriorating our country, right under our nose:
I find it rather perplexing that the same Nigerians who lynched, lambasted, and castigated the immediate past administration are now the ones calling for understanding and patriotism.
The current administration started off strongly in the departments of finger-pointing, name-calling, and stunningly, even self-righteousness - they saw the beauty of the glass house they were residing in, and felt so cozy living in it, but as a result of a gross lack of prudence, they gallantly began to throw giant stones from it, probably because the architect of their beautiful glass mansion lied to them that it is bullet-proof or something. Astonishingly, today when a tiny stone is thrown back at their precious glass abode, they get so touchy and overly sensitive, till their faces turn green - go figure!
Personally, I loathe the idea of being outrightly and explicitly profane towards leaders, because I believe if you stand with your briefcase, suit and tie, to argue and exchange insults with a mad man, you surely would be perceived to be an even more profound and laughable mad man. That being said, I strongly believe in constructive criticism and prayer for the nation, I also believe that there are more civil, edifying, and educative ways of professing and debating our views; we don't have to condescend so low in order to express our frustration and fury. But what boggles my mind is the fact that those who showed utter unadulterated disdain and disrespect to the last government feel that it's nothing but treachery and treason to show the same ill sentiments to the current regime. This partisan behaviour just baffles me, and it's undoubtedly one of the sad reasons our nation is so dishonest and divided.
If we want to be a people of honour, dignity, and good repute, we should learn to call a spade a spade at all times - in an honourable, dignifying, and reputable manner - regardless of who leads us, and which political party rules us. Let's bear in mind that at the end of the day, we're the ones at the receiving end of whatever our leaders brew - good or bad. The leaders we support with acute glaucoma in our eyes just so we can be blind to their incompetence will still return to their lush and lavish lives and lifestyles even after their regimes end. Or don't you know that the people of Nigeria are currently being overrun by the molten magma of recession, but our leaders are unaware because hunger and poverty forgot to remind and update them on current affairs? You mean you're unaware of the fact that the man you're killing yourself for doesn't even know or care to know about you or your reality? Well if you didn't know, now open your eyes and see that he only recognizes his numerous cursed bank accounts... Look. People. It's time to wake up and swallow a cool glass of wisdom.
May God help us!
